Plant Room was a small space for growing and socialising created on a left over site behind a large billboard on East Road in Hoxton. 200 terracotta pots were allocated to 45 local residents and placed in a series of shelves that enclosed and sheltered the space from the busy road.
At the start of the project and to the dismay of the adjacent housing estate, the site was over-grown with vegetation attracting rubbish dumping and other anti-social behaviour. Together with local residents what if: projects who are also based in the Shoreditch area transformed the site into a garden conceived as a room with walls created from vertically stacked plants.
The garden was commissioned as a temporary intervention and closed when the site was sold in 2009. While the site has since been developed into housing, the opportunity to retain and foster the network of people that established through the temporary intervention was missed. No alternative site was provided but the numbered pots can still be found in the area.
